Our sustainability journey

Sustainability has always been at the heart of our operations. But over the past 25 years, we have streamlined our efforts and shifted from a regional to a global approach. We introduced a global program with ambitious goals, and are working to adapt our business to ensure sustainability becomes fully embedded in our day-to-day operations. In recent years, we have reached some important milestones in our sustainability journey. We hope to continue our efforts over the next 25 years and beyond, as we strive to create a future worth living. For patients. Worldwide. Every day.

Sharing our progress

For our annual Non-Financial Report, first published in 2017, colleagues from around the globe work together to provide transparent information on our sustainability performance across the whole business. The report is filled with information about our sustainability efforts and what actions we take to continuously improve in this area.

Extending our reach

The work of the Fresenius Medical Care Foundation reflects our commitment to always put our patients first. Launched in 2018, the Foundation helps raise awareness of kidney disease, focusing on the benefit of and need for kidney transplants.

Raising awareness

The ‘Kidney Kid’, a beloved superhero character, started teaching children and families about good kidney health in 2017 via interactive activities and resources. Originally based in Taiwan, our hero has since spread his cape and travelled across the globe, sharing his knowledge with children worldwide.

Building a partner network

Over the years, we have formed successful partnerships with a variety of leading organizations that share our goal of empowering patients and advancing holistic renal care. For example, we work with Renal Support Network to deliver high-quality education to chronic kidney disease patients and their care providers, striving to make a difference in their lives.

Strengthening our guidelines

The Code of Ethics and Business Conduct forms the basis of every action we take. It helps us navigate diverse themes ranging from patient care, quality, anti-corruption, and bribery to data privacy and environmental protection. In 2020, the Code was revised to include a stronger focus on sustainability, among other topics.

Streamlining our goals

Launched in 2020, the Global Sustainability Program helps us embed sustainability in our operations and day-to-day decisions. The program brings together regions and global functions to work as one team, supporting idea sharing and driving best practice.

Supporting worthy causes

In 2021, Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA) announced its return as a national sponsor of the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk. Employees enthusiastically grabbed their walking shoes and joined fundraising efforts, helping add to the almost $2 million raised by FMCNA throughout the partnership.

Emphasizing our long-term commitment

Linking Management Board compensation to sustainability underscores our shared responsibility in accelerating progress towards our goals. It emphasizes our long-term commitment to our patients, our communities, and the planet.

Involving the community

As part of the ‘Second Life’ campaign, established in Poland in 2009, we make a charitable donation on behalf of the participating high school that raises awareness of organ donation in the most creative way. Through concerts, sporting events, and even virtual activities, students spread the word about the importance of organ transplants, reaching out to their peers and the wider community.

Supporting in times of need

Fresenius Medical Care’s disaster relief teams make sure that dialysis patients can continue their life-saving treatment despite natural catastrophes. Whether facing floods, hurricanes, or fire, our employees will continue to go the extra mile to make sure our patients get the care they need.
