20 years Fresenius Medical Care

Opening Bell Ceremony

Fresenius Medical Care celebrates 20th anniversary.

Everything begun with the merger of the dialysis business of Fresenius and the American dialysis services provider National Medical Care on September 30, 1996; directly followed by the initial public offering in Frankfurt and New York at the beginning of October.

To mark 20 years since the founding of Fresenius Medical Care and the company’s listing on the stock exchange, Rice Powell rang in the start of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange’s daily trading on October 12, 2016.

In 1996, the merger of Fresenius‘ dialysis business with the U.S. dialysis provider National Medical Care resulted in the creation of Fresenius Medical Care, the world’s leading dialysis provider. Its shares are traded on the Frankfurt and New York stock exchanges.

At the time of the acquisition, National Medical Care operated about 500 clinics, and treated some 40,000 patients.

The first dialysis machine developed by Fresenius, the A2008C, was introduced in 1978. It was awarded a gold medal for technological innovation at the Leipzig Trade Fair the next year.

For production of the A2008C, Fresenius opened a new plant in 1979 in the German city of Schweinfurt, Bavaria. Today, every second dialysis machine sold worldwide comes from Schweinfurt.
